An Interview with Gary Massie

As a fresh faced teenager, Massie was introduced to the club by his brother Keith, who himself spent 5 wonderful seasons at the club, though in reality most of that period was spent suspended as a result of 456 sendings off.  The second longest serving person on the playing staff at Nomads, Gary has spent 12 seasons avoiding tough games in Corby and relegation dog fights.

A dream debut in the 1996/97 season saw Gary make one of only 3 appearances in Corby over twelve years - a wonderful solo effort was enough to sink title chasing Strip Mills. Over the years, Massie has used every illness / ailment  in the book to get out of playing, from Glandular Fever to Dandruff, whilst record books also show that he has made more appearances at Old Trafford than Orlingbury Road.

When available, Gary has been a regular member of both first team and reserves, his ability to play in a number of positions has been an asset to every manager he has played for. Known as one of the clubs Mr Nice guys Gary's reputation was left in tatters at the end of the 2008/09 season, when a vote rigging scandal saw him controversially crowned First Team Player of The Year. As the new season approached, and with the scandal still rolling, first team manager Nathan Eady courted more controversy by installing Massie as first team captain. This has not gone down with some of the more loyal players like Paul Smith, with rumours a plenty that the urine soaked stalwart is considering leaving the club for the 15th and last time.

With 12 seasons, 36 appearances, 8 goals and still only one trick to his name, Gary Massie took time out to share his thoughts and memories with us...

Name:                   Gary Dalglish Massie

Birthplace:           Liverpool

Family:                 Lives with "friend" Joe / No adopted children yet.

Nicknames:          Gaz / One Trick / Sick note .

Clubs:                    Kettering Nomads

Best moment in football:            Winning 08/09 Player of the Year was great. The people saying that me getting 109% of the votes was a fix are only jealous, who cares if I only played 3 games.

Worst moment in football:         It was a Saturday morning and we were due to play Corby Pegasus away. I had a total blank and could not think of a single excuse to get out of playing, so I had to turn up and play for a whole 12 minutes. Luckily for me I "pulled my hamstring" and had to come off.

Worst Injury:          We were playing away at the footballing hotbed of Spratton when I bravely made a rare tackle. However my momentum carried me beyond the boundaries of the pitch, and my life flashed before me as the surrounding pitch rope gave me a nasty burn on my neck.

Biggest regret in football:          None. I live and breath football, it is my life apart from stag do's, concerts and watching United.

Biggest influence:                        My brother Keith. He was my coach at youth football and every single trick I know is down to that man. In our day we were known as Kettering's answer to the Neville Brothers.

Life after Nomads?:                     My aim over the next 6 years is to get to 50 appearances. Once I've achieved that, I think I will try and get to more concerts, United games and stag do's.

Captain Marvel, as he is now known, has certainly been impressive for the first few games of this season - impressive in the fact that one of those games has been in Corby. When Gary finally does hang his boots up they certainly won't be worn out, however a popular guy to have in the squad, he really will go down as one of the best two Massies to have ever donned a Nomads shirt.
